Mud fever is an aggressive bacterial condition that can affect the lower limbs of horses and ponies. Mud fever causes irritation, as well as inflammation and swelling underneath the epidermis. If not treated mud fever can become very serious very quickly.
Mud fever is most common in winter but can effect some horses all year round.
Carr & Day & Martin Martin MF Pro is a simple 1-2-3 process to aid in the management and subsequent prevention of winter skin conditions.
Directions for use
Step 1 – Antibacterial Cleaner
Horses with even slight mud fever are often very sensitive to light touch or contact. It is therefore essential that the affected area is NOT scrubbed, but is instead gently and effectively cleansed.
Dampen the affected areas using warm water. Apply the gentle cleanser directly to the skin and gently massage using the sponge. Leave for five minutes to allow antibacterial cleansing and softening of stubborn scabs before rinsing with warm water.
Very gently remove any loose scabs from the skin and then carefully dry the affected area with a soft towel.
Whilst it is desirable to remove all the scabs from the surface of the skin, only remove those that are either flaky or loose. Those more firmly attached should be treated further before attempting removal. This treatment method avoids unnecessary discomfort to the horse.
Step 2 – Soothing Balm
Following on from Step 1, ensure the leg is clean and dry. Apply a thick layer of Soothing Balm. Gently massage the balm into the skin ensuring that all affected areas are covered. Next, apply the Leg Wrap as you would apply a bandage ensuring that the wrap is not too tight.
If possible, apply an exercise bandage over the top of the wrap. Whilst it is not essential, it is beneficial and it can help speed up the process if a warm layer is applied over the top of the Leg Wrap. Leave overnight to allow full absorption.
Continue step 1 & step 2 daily until visible signs of skin irritation have subsided (usually 3 to 4 days).
N.B. Prior to first application depresses the pump several times until the product is dispensed.
Step 3 – Protective Salve Barrier
Once the affected areas have shown improvement, you can now move on to step 3 for protection during turnout or riding.
First clean the leg with Step 1. Allow the skin to dry, then apply the protective salve barrier liberally, ensuring even coverage. For best coverage apply the protective salve in the direction of the hair. Allow the body’s natural heat to make the formula more pliable – then work in well to the skin to ensure that vulnerable areas are entirely coated. Use daily, for turnout and riding, or as required to keep legs dry and bacteria free.
Once all signs of active infection have cleared, continue to use the Protective Salve Barrier to prevent any further recurrence.
N.B. If your horse’s condition persists or deteriorates, seek the immediate attention of your veterinarian.
